Protecting the United States Recovered Fiber Supply

The Paper Recycling Coalition represents the policy interests of the 100% recycled paperboard and containerboard industries.

The PRC’s member companies are leaders in recycling and sustainable manufacturing. We are true recyclers—the companies that take old materials and use them to make new products.

Our members manufacture 100% recycled paper products that are ubiquitous in American commerce, including cereal and pizza boxes, tubes and cores, and other shipping cartons and containers critical to today’s circular economy.

More paper and paperboard is recovered for recycling than any other packaging material.

The paperboard and containerboard manufacturing sectors are among the country’s greatest economic and environmental success stories. The amount of mill quality recycled fiber recovered for recycling has doubled since 1990. In 2022, nearly 68 percent of all paper used by Americans was recovered to be recycled into new products, marking the twelfth consecutive year with a rate above 60 percent.

The paper industry recycles about 50 million tons of recovered paper every year — totaling more than 1 billion tons over the past 20 years. According to the U.S. EPA, more paper by weight is recovered for recycling than plastic, glass, steel, and aluminum combined.

The Paper Recycling Coalition educates policy leaders, regulators, Members of Congress and their staffs, and others about the impact of various policies on the 100% recycled paperboard and containerboard industries. We also work closely with the environmental community and other organizations to advise them of our interests and concerns.

PRC member companies have over 500 facilities in 45 states, with an annual economic footprint of approximately $150 billion, and represent over 63,000 well-paid jobs with benefits that we are committed to keeping in this country.
